TransAm Trucking Selects GeoLogic Solutions
After Extensive Evaluation Process
Entire fleet of nearly 1,000 trucks to
be equipped with the MobileMax™ system
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – December 15, 2004 –
GeoLogic Solutions, the industry’s first company to
offer a mobile communications and tracking system that combines
satellite and terrestrial networks into a single intelligent
solution, today announced that Kansas City-based TransAm Trucking
will equip its fleet of nearly 1,000 trucks with the company’s
MobileMax™ Multi-Mode™ communications system.
A GeoLogic Solutions customer for nearly ten years, (with
the Pro2000™ mobile communications system, a predecessor
of MobileMax), TransAm felt it was time to re-evaluate the
entire mobile communications market since so many changes
had been made in the wireless industry in the past decade.
After a very thorough evaluation process, the MobileMax solution
was selected as the communications system best suited for
TransAm. The primary decision was based on the system’s
multi-mode functionality-- the ability to automatically switch
between satellite and terrestrial services.
“At this point we believe all of the communications
companies have good solid products,” stated Russ McElliott,
chief operating officer for TransAm. “It came down to
the fact that GeoLogic offers a reliable multi-mode solution
that we firmly believe reduces our monthly communications
costs, has 100% reliable coverage and helps us with theft
recovery.”
In addition to seeing a noticeable decrease in monthly communications
costs (according to McElliott, 73% of all messages are sent
over the less expensive terrestrial-based network), the company
believes the multi-mode functionality increases the company’s
odds of theft recovery.
TransAm conducted a six-month evaluation of the leading satellite-only
communications system and found that although the hardware
was reliable, the communications coverage was not always 100%.
“We found at certain angles or while parked at covered
docks or near buildings we lost sight of the satellite and
therefore lost communications,” stated McElliott. “Since
we track how long a driver is at a dock and integrate this
with our detention billing system [a system for billing customers
for extended dock time] it is vital for us to always have
a read on our trucks.”
TransAm will use the MobileMax system to automate billing,
payroll, fuel tax, and maintenance reporting and for automatic
arrival/departure notifications. In addition to basic dispatch
communication, drivers will use the onboard system to receive
customer directions and to send emergency notifications. Beginning
January 1, TransAm will use the system to monitor vehicle
speed and idle-time.
“We are glad TransAm made the decision to stay with
us,” stated Ken Mitchell, vice president of sales and
marketing for GeoLogic Solutions. “They were very wise
to re-evaluate the market. A lot has happened in the industry,
and it’s great to know that after testing the competition
our MobileMax multi-mode system proved to be the best solution
for them.”

About TransAm Trucking
Established in 1987 TransAm Trucking, based in Kansas City,
Missouri began as a contract carrier with 70 tractors and
100 refrigerated trailers. It operated with 48-state authority;
however, the service areas were primarily east-west lanes
within the eastern two thirds of the country. In 1990 the
company outgrew the office and shop facility in Missouri and
moved across the state line to Olathe, Kansas. High cube dry
vans were added to the fleet and the lanes of service were
expanded. TransAm is one of the top U.S. carriers today.
